background repagination

I'm having problems with a large file in Word 2002. Moving

throughout the file is causing it to repaginate, which is

causing Word to freeze. I noticed that when I go to

Tools - Options - General, background repagination IS

selected, but it's also greyed out so I can't deselect it.

Is this normal ? Would deselecting this make a

difference ? The thing is, I do not have this problem

viewing the same document in Word 2000, and background

repagination is selected in 2000 as well.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

    • Lynn,

I suspect that you are working in Print Layout view, like I do. In order to

turn off background repagination, you need to first switch to Normal View.

This will probably help you in the short term, but if your application is

freezing, you should implement a more permanent fix, such as splitting the

      file into multiple smaller files.

      Regards,

      Chad

    • Thanks, but when I remove background repagination in

Normal view then switch back to Print Layout, it's

selected again. This is actually for a client of mine. At

first I thought the document was corrupt, because it's

doing unusual things. Plus, it's only showing to be 42

pages, but it's really over 200. The thing is, this

behaves fine in Word 2000. Can anyone tell me what changed

between 2000 and 2002 that is causing this to act up ?

I'm not sure how to resolve this for the client. He has

many documents like this, and going back to Word 2000

      isn't an option.

    • Hi Lynn,

Background repagination can be switched off for Normal(draft) view

but it's always on for Print Layout view.

It's possible that the document has some corruption in it.

Can you open it in Word 2000 and save as RTF or HTML for

example then open it in Word 2002?

The page count can vary based on the printer driver selected

in each copy of Word, but the difference of 45 vs 200 would

      be a bit unusual.
